Was my friend right or he is delusional?

This is where people get confused: they insist that various evolutionary traits are 'meant' to be used for one thing or another. Basically it's the problem that people simply don't properly understand evolution. Or as in the case of your Dad, believe in fairy stories and the implied morality of them.
